About me
Mildred Mensah, CRNP, is a nurse practitioner at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in the Department of Thoracic Surgery. She specializes in the pre- and post-operative care of patients undergoing thoracic surgical procedures, including those with thoracic malignancies such as lung and esophageal cancer, as well as benign foregut conditions like hiatal hernia and gastroesophageal reflux disease.
Prior to becoming a nurse practitioner, Mildred worked as a cardiac nurse at MedStar Washington Hospital Center for Six years, where she developed a strong clinical foundation in managing complex, high-acuity patients. This experience has shaped her ability to provide thorough, detail-oriented, and compassionate care to her surgical patients.
In her current role, Mildred performs comprehensive pre-operative evaluations, coordinates diagnostic testing, and provides patient education to ensure individuals are well-prepared for surgery. She is actively involved in post-operative management, including pain control, wound care, surgical pathology review, and long-term follow-up care. She works closely alongside Dr. Hwalek and Dr. Chan, supporting thoracic surgical procedures including minimally invasive and robot-assisted techniques. Mildred also collaborates with a multidisciplinary team including pulmonologists, oncologists, radiologists, and gastroenterologists to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care.

Philosophy of Care
“I am committed to providing compassionate, patient-centered care that addresses both the physical and emotional needs of my patients. I believe in taking the time to educate patients about their conditions and treatment options so they feel confident and supported throughout their surgical journey.
My faith plays an important role in how I approach care, guiding me to treat every patient with kindness, empathy, and respect. I strive to be a source of comfort and reassurance while helping patients navigate surgery, recover safely, and return to their daily lives with confidence.”
